A Brief History of Instagram’s Fateful First Day

On October 6th, 2010, the first version of Instagram was released to the world. This photo-sharing application quickly gained fame and popularity, having over 1 million registered users in just two months. From its humble beginnings all the way to the multi-billion dollar platform it is today, this is the remarkable story of Instagram’s fateful first day.

The Beginning of Instagram

Instagram was created in San Francisco, California by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Systrom, a computer science major, developed the initial idea while interning at Odeo, which was a startup company that was later bought out by Twitter.

Krieger was an engineer with a master’s degree in Media Arts and Sciences from MIT. He met Systrom at a seminar in San Francisco, and the two formed a friendship by exchanging ideas on developing an app that could help people share photos easily with friends and family.

The Development of the App

Systrom and Krieger decided to go ahead and develop the app, launching a ‘closed beta’ for select people in the summer of 2010. Taking the feedback from their initial users, the two went back to the drawing board and ended up finalizing their project and releasing it to the Apple app store in October of that year.

The Launch

The app was launched with a simple design, allowing users to take pictures, apply varied special effects, and then share them with friends and family.

Six days after the official launch, Instagram had over 26 thousand users, and just two months later, the app already had over 1 million users.

The Early Years

In June 2012, the application was bought out by Facebook for $1 billion dollars. The success of Instagram during the early years prompted Facebook to make a bid, as they saw Instagram as a tool that could help them increase the functionality of their own platform.

It was at this point that Instagram began its journey to becoming the $100 billion dollar platform we know today, bringing with it its own set of challenges and obstacles.

The Challenges of Growing

Among the challenges that Instagram faced during its rise to fame was providing a secure platform for its users.
